Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?

I stumbled upon this book during one of my grocery runs while on exchange and although I’ve heard about Earthing or Grounding before, I never really delved into the subject until reading this book. Since then, discovering this simple and effective health remedy has had a tremendous impact in my life as well as those close to me.

What is Earthing?

Earthing involves reconnecting your body to the surface of the earth either by walking barefoot on grass or at the beach or by being in contact with a grounding device while working or sleeping indoors or in high-rise buildings.

What isn’t Earthing?

Wrapping our feet with insulating materials like shoes, slippers and socks that disconnect us from the surface of the earth.

What happens when you Earth?

“You body becomes suffused with negatively charged free-electrons abundantly present on the surface of the Earth. Your body immediately equalizes to the same electric energy level, or potential, as the Earth.”

What do you feel?

“Sometimes a warm, tingling sensation and other feelings of ease and well-being.”

Will you feel better?

“Usually, yes, and often rapidly. The degree of improvement varies from person to person. The important thing is to make Earthing an important addition to your daily routine, and to do it as much as possible so as to gain maximum benefits. When Earthing is stopped, symptoms tend to return slowly.”

What does Earthing do?

“Observations and research indicate the following benefits from Earthing; we expect many more to emerge with ongoing studies. Earthing:

  • Diffuses the cause of inflammation, and improves or eliminates the symptoms of many inflammation-related disorders.
  • Reduces or eliminates chronic pain.
  • Improves sleep in most cases.
  • Increases energy.
  • Lowers stress and promotes calmness in the body by cooling down the nervous system and stress hormones.
  • Normalizes the body’s biological rhythms.
  • Thins blood and improves blood pressure and flow.
  • Relieves muscle tension and headaches.
  • Lessens hormonal and menstrual symptoms.
  • Dramatically speeds healing and helps prevent bedsores.
  • Reduces or eliminates jet lag.
  • Protects the body against potentially health disturbing environmental electromagnetic fields (EMF).
  • Accelerates recovery from intense athletic activity.”

This list is clearly not exhaustive thus, you can see the potential of Earthing – it can literally help with almost every single ailment and chronic disease or health problem plaguing our society as well as improve our performance in daily life.

How does Earthing work?

The surface of the Earth is abundant with negatively charged particles, aka electrons. Electricians and geophysicists will know that our planet “is a six sextillion (that’s six followed by twenty-one zeroes) metric ton battery that is continually being replenished by solar radiation, lightning and heat from its deep-down molten core.”

Similar to the currents in our oceans, these electrons also have their own currents known as “telluric currents” and are part of a larger system called the “global electrical circuit”. It is believed that this “bank of almost limitless energy is continually replenished with free electrons via an average of 5,000 lightning strikes per minute occurring perpetually around the planet.”

“Just like the earth, your body is mostly water and minerals, and both are excellent conductors of electrons. The free electrons on the surface of the Earth are easily transferred up, into and throughout your body as long as there is direct skin contact with the ground.”

What happens when we go too long without this direct contact with the Earth?

Positively charged particles start to build up within our bodies due to the lack of free electrons to neutralize them. The most famous of these are Reactive Oxygen Species, more commonly known as free radicals. These are closely associated with our bodies’ inflammatory and immune responses. In the short-term, acute inflammation is actually beneficial as it “is the complex biological response of the body to harmful stimuli such as pathogens, damaged cells or irritants. It is the protective attempt by the system to remove injurious or threatening agents as well as start the healing process for the affected tissue.”

On the other hand, chronic inflammation happens when “there is a progressive shift in the type of activity going on at the site of inflammation. You get simultaneous destruction and healing of the tissue, but a harmful free radical encroachment into healthy, surrounding tissue. … The good guys become bad guys on a rampage, ripping up innocent healthy cells. Think of security dogs that snag the burglar and then go after their owner. … The immune system gears switch into overdrive, sending in more white blood cells that produce more free radicals. This is why free radicals have a bad rap and why scientists unanimously agree that free radical activity is at the basis of chronic disease and the aging process, particularly accelerated aging and limited lifespan.”

Chronic inflammation runs rampant in almost all of our chronic diseases today such as allergies, Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, Asthma, Autism, Cancer, Cardiovascular disease, diabetes type 1 & 2, fibromyalgia, intestinal disorders, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, all autoimmune disorders and much more.

“Throughout history, humans have strolled, sat, stood and slept on the ground – the skin of their bodies touching the skin of the Earth – oblivious to the fact that such simple contact transfers a natural electrical signal to the body. … We are learning that the Earth’s electrical energy maintains the order of our own bodily frequencies just as a conductor controls the coherence and cadence of an orchestra. … “

Thus through Earthing, we supply our bodies with a limitless abundance of free electrons which are the “objects of desire” for these free radicals. The result is the neutralization of those positively charged and damaging particles which leads to a remarkable reduction in inflammation and pain and ultimately veering towards a restoration of our bodies’ normal biological processes.

How to get started?

The easiest and simplest way to start Earthing is by going outdoors, taking your shoes off and walking on the grass! Through experience, the authors of the book recommend spending at least 3o mins of Earthing to feel significant benefits. Some people may feel better instantly while others who are more ‘damaged’ due to chronic disease may require significantly longer periods of Earthing to feel the effects. However, one thing is certain – the benefits improve with consistent and prolonged grounding and symptoms slowly return as soon as you get disconnected.

“If you have the opportunity, connect with the Earth 2 or 3 times a day. The more time you put in, the more you benefit. The more compromised your health is, the more often and longer we recommend that you do this.”

What types of ground are best for Earthing? Simply put, the more conductive the material, the better! Thus the following is listed in order of conductivity or Earthing potential:

  1. Water-wise – “Salt water, rich in minerals, is highly conductive and actually several hundred times more so than fresh water.” Next in line would be fresh water from lakes or reservoirs and lastly pool water. “A plastic kiddie pool would not be conductive because the plastic would insulate the water from ground contact.” Simply wading or dangling you legs in the water is enough to Earth. Bathing or swimming in it is even better due to more surface area of your body in contact with the water.
  2. Ground wise the best option would be walking, standing, sitting or exercising in contact with grass that has been moisturized with morning dew or recent rain. The water improves conductivity. Alternatively you can always pour some water to wet the area under your feet beforehand.
  3. Concrete is also conductive because it is made of water and minerals. If you have a concrete basement, it would be good to wet it before grounding to increase its conductivity as mentioned above. However if the concrete surface is painted then it would not work. Similarly, Asphalt is made from petrochemicals and thus not conductive. Wood and vinyl surfaces are also non-conductive.

For most folks living indoors (which I’m guessing is most of you), it is still possible to Earth through the use of grounding pads. These are usually made of conductive materals like leather and a protective cloth covering which has silver thread woven in it. The pads are connected via a snap cord to the grounding port of electrical sockets. Alternatively, people who live on the ground floor can connect their grounding mats or bed sheets to a grounding rod which they stick into the ground in their backyard or garden.

The universal grounding mat I use at home!

Earthing.com is a great resource and webpage which sells such universal grounding mats and accessories. Personally, I purchased mine from this website. I stand or sit on these throughout the day at home and sleep on them during the night.

For more serious cases and targeted treatment, the authors recommend using an Earthing patch which is basically an ECG/EKG disposable electrode patch that can be attached to a particular site of injury, wounds or significant necrosis.

Lastly, another option of Earthing without the need to take off your shoes would be to wear footwear specially designed to allow conductivity from the Earth to your body. It can be in the form of copper plugs installed into your footwear as seen in Earth Runners. Alternatively, you can also wear leather soled moccasins such as those sold from Soft Star Shoes.

Just received this pair of Moccasins from Soft Star Shoes! Besides their ‘Earthability’ these are BY FAR THE MOST COMFORTABLE SHOES I’ve ever owned!
