My iHerb Shopping List for Natural Products!

How often do you find yourself shopping online for natural products for your health?

Whats your favourite website or online store?

As the title of this post suggests, my favourite is iHerb!

Almost every month, I find myself shopping on iherb.com for various natural products, supplements, snacks or groceries for the house. It has become my go-to online grocer for health products that are hard to find in Singapore or for discounts to overpriced items sold in the stores here. Below are some additional reasons why I love iHerb:

  1. Extremely wide range of products
  2. Regular discounts on items
  3. Greater discounts if you purchase two or more of the same product
  4. 10% Savings from your previous order
  5. Free international shipping on orders above a certain amount (~ SGD$58.47)
  6. Reliable packing and shipping that has never failed to ensure goods reach in “off the shelf” quality
  7. Your very own discount code! (Psssst, mine’s “SCM575”) 😉

Without further ado, here is a list of items I find worth buying from iHerb because of various reasons stated below.

*** Use code “SCM575” for a discount on your first purchase! (1st time customers only)

***If you’re outside US and shop on Amazon, try this chrome extension “RateX” and never pay for unreasonable exchange rates and hidden bank fees ever again!

Groceries & Snacks!

1. For Cooking: Nutiva, Organic Coconut Oil, Virgin, 23 fl oz (680 ml)

Coconut Oik.png

This one is value for money due to its sheer quantity as compared to the ones on the shelf in Singapore (~$15 for 200+ml!). Plus, Nutiva is a very established brand!

There isn’t a difference between Virgin and Extra virgin so don’t fret.

Also, try to get unrefined and cold pressed when shopping for coconut oil as its more nutritious and less processed that way. However, you will get a strong taste of coconut thus for those who sniffle their noses at the taste or smell of coconut, you should go for the refined ones.

2a. Tasty Dessert Condiment: Kevala, Organic Coconut Butter, 16 oz (454 g)

Coconut Butter.png

I’m been addicted to coconut butter ever since I first tried it!

The consistency is kinda like peanut butter but I don’t eat it from the jar. Instead, I pour some on cold fruits from the fridge like papayas or berries and the temperature of the fruits will cause the coconut butter to freeze and harden almost immediately. Before starting the AIP-NS diet, I would also add some raw Cacao Powder (you can use Carob powder on AIP) over those coconut butter laden papayas and the combination of that results in it tasting really like Chocolate!

Before, I consistently bought Nutiva’s Coconut Manna however over time I realized the taste and colour was off so I switched to Kevala which has not failed to disappoint me yet!

You can see the coconut butter on the Papayas, beneath all that other stuff!

2b. Healthy Snack Dip: Eden Foods, Organic Apple Butter Spread, 17 oz (482 g)

Apple Butter.png

If you haven’t tried Apple Butter, you’re missing out! This is a tasty dipping condiment as well as spread! Dip banana chips (cooked in coconut oil) or vegetables like raw cucumber/celery/carrot, or fruits, etc in them for a delicious snack!

3a. Healthy Snacks On-The-Go: Wild Planet, Wild Sardines In Extra Virgin Oil with Lemon, 4.375 oz (125 g)

Wild Sardine.png

These sardines are great as a snack or meal when travelling, especially if you are on a strict diet like the AIP or NS ones. Wild caught and packed in olive oil, add a little salt and you’ll be more than satisfied! I was introduced to these by Tim Ferriss on another one of this fantastic podcasts. When eating fish, its better to go for wild caught rather than farmed varieties and when eating wild caught, its better to go for smaller ones like Sardines because they don’t accumulate as much mercury and heavy metals from the ocean as bigger fish like Tuna and Swordfish which live for dozens of years.

3b. Healthy Snacks On-The-Go: Crown Prince Natural, Smoked Baby Clams in Olive Oil, 3 oz (85 g)

baby Clam.png

Similar to the sardines, this is another great travel snack companion!

3c. Healthy Snacks On-The-Go: Epic Bars!

Epic Bar.png

Another awesome brand I love because of their meticulous sourcing of organic, pasture raised and finished animals. You get protein from real meat that tastes delicious!

The only downside is that they are pretty costly, about the price of one can of sardines so I save these for travels and don’t snack on them at home.

3c. Healthy Snacks On-The-Go: SeaSnax!

Sea Snax.png

Delicious, nutritious seaweed snacks, they are a healthier alternative to chips! Those on an AIP diet can choose the original flavor which only uses olive oil and sea salt to roast the seaweed. They can be used as a delicious wrap for Sushi too!

4a. Desiccated Liver: Now Foods, Liver Powder, 12 oz (340 g)

Liver Powder.png

Its no secret that liver and other organ meats are packed full with nutrients and in my opinion, is one of the best sources of micro-nutrients. I treat this like a multivitamin pill and add it in my bone broths which gives it a salty flavour akin to the Pork Floss that we Chinese love to eat.

4b. Desiccated Liver: Solgar, Desiccated Liver, 250 Tablets

I started buying these instead of the above Now Foods brand because I wasn’t sure if the Liver powder was derived from grass fed and finished Argentine cows anymore. At least Solgar reassures its customers so.

5. Regular Flour Alternative: Nutiva, Coconut Flour, Gluten Free, 3 lb (1.36 kg)

Coconut Flour.png

After I started the AIP-NS diet, due to the elimination of all starches, Coconut flour is now the only flour left that I’m allowed to consume. Thus its essential if I want to learn how to bake those snacks and treats I’ve missed like bread or cookies, pancakes and muffins!

6. Soy Sauce Alternative: Coconut Secret, The Original Coconut Aminos, Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce, 8 fl oz (237 ml)

Coconut Aminos.png

Soy sauce almost always has gluten in it because of the addition of wheat. Thus its off limits for me. Coconut Aminos however, are a perfect substitute! It has a lighter texture but tastes almost the same and its definitely more nutritious because its made from the sap of the coconut tree. “This sap is very low glycemic, an abundant source of 17 amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and has a nearly neutral pH.”

7. Raw Cocoa Alternative: Sunfood, Organic Carob Powder, Raw, 1 lb (454 g)

I haven’t reintroduced Cocoa to see if I have a reaction to it so at the moment I’m using Carob as the substitute. Its delicious, more nutritious than Cocoa, less allergenic, less stimulating (no caffeine) and full of fiber and antioxidants. See here and here to learn more! Roasting removes some of the nutrients hence I like to buy these raw. (Same for nuts and seeds)

8. Tortilla Wrap Alternative: The Julian Bakery, Paleo Wraps, 7 Wraps, 3.5 oz (98 g)

paleo wraps.png

Made entirely of organic coconut meat, coconut water and unrefined virgin coconut oil, these wrap alternatives are the perfect substitute to tortilla wraps! They have a long shelf life of 9 months and being a wrap, is really versatile. Sadly, hey are constantly sold out on iherb!

Supplements

1a. Fish Oil: Source Naturals, Arctic Pure, Omega-3 Fish Oil, Ultra Potency, 850 mg, 60 Softgels

fish-oil

Choosing a quality fish oil supplement from the vast selection out there can be very tedious and confusing. Especially when it comes to the supplement business, many companies have been found to not be 100% honest in their food labelling. Source Naturals is one of those brands that consistently achieves a top grade on independent lab testing sites so I trust this brand although I haven’t been able to find specific reviews for these Arctic Pure ones. For its price (currently SGD$16.26, $15.52 discount!), each capsule offers 450 mg of EPA and 340 mg of DHA. Which is more than most fish oil supplements!

1b. Fish Oil: Controlled Labs, Orange OxiMega Fish Oil, Citrus Flavor, 120 Softgels

This brand of fish oil is within the top 10 in terms of quality on Labdoor which speaks volumes! Its the only other brand on iHerb which I’ve found to be of good quality. I used to buy these however its almost twice as costly as Source Naturals. These days I stick with the former.

2. Detox and Cleanse: Nature’s Way, Charcoal, Activated, 280 mg, 100 Capsules

A.C.pngThere are numerous uses for Activated Charcoal.

  1. You can take it as a detox and cleanser 2 hours before or after meals, just make sure you don’t take it with medication as it acts as an adsorbent. “Each particle contains many small chambers and cavities that “capture” or bind-up unwanted materials and gas, which are safely carried out of the digestive system.”
  2. It helps with food poisoning and stomach aches in the event you consumed something your sensitive to. I never leave the home without some capsules in my bag!
  3. In the event of an serious insect bite that contains venom or poison, opening up a capsule and adding some water to form a paste to smear on the bite can help draw up some of the poison as you wait for emergency help.
  4. Some people claim opening up a capsule and brushing your teeth with it produce white teeth almost instantaneously!

On multiple occasions, I’ve had stomach pains from eating the wrong kinds of foods outside and each time, just 2 pills of Activated Charcoal is enough to take away the pain in a matter of minutes!

3a. Superfood Greens Powder: MRM, Global Greens, 8 oz (225 g)

I have not personally tried this brand but am intending to buy it in my next order. I was intrigued by the list of ingredients and further digging led me to really like the company and what they strive to achieve in their products. I’m thinking of taking it next time I try a Fasting Mimicking Diet.

3b. Superfood Greens Powder: HealthForce Nutritionals, Vitamineral Green, Version 5.3, 17.64 oz (500 g)

Greens supplement.png

Haven’t tried this either but I just might get this in my next order! Reading the description of the product, I am pretty blown away. This one is especially good for a Fasting Mimicking Diet if I ever want to try it in the future. Its also AIP compliant as there are no nuts and seeds, just 100% greens.

For The Home

1. Natural Dishwashing Liquid: ATTITUDE, Dishwashing Liquid

Before this, our family was using the traditional “Ma Ma Lemon” which is pretty well-known household brand in Singapore. I didn’t like how it always made my hands feel very dry after doing the dishes. This made me suspect it wasn’t completly natural although its advertised as “Natural”. Furthermore they don’t list their ingredients used and I couldn’t find them anywhere on the interwebs. Pretty dubious huh.

Anyhow, I love this brand of dishwashing liquid as its pretty safe and derived from natural ingredients. In addition, their Little Ones range is hypoallergenic which is very safe if you have little kids and infants around.

2a. Laundry: Nellie’s All-Natural, Laundry Soda, 100 Loads, 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg)

Detergent.png

Its a known fact that most of our laundry detergent are made of chemicals we don’t want in our system. I bought this more for my mum’s sake because she likes to scrub clothes or soak them in tubs of water before throwing them in the washing machine. The previous laundry detergent she was using made my hands really dry, another obvious sign of chemicals. And since our skin is our “second mouth”, I shudder to think of how much detergent she’s absorbed through her skin over the decades.

The description for this product also describes how the way they sell it (in powder form) gives us consumers more bang for our buck. This way we don’t pay for unwanted water content which we can add on our own when we mix the detergent.

“At Nellie’s we don’t think selling you water and moving water around the planet is a good idea. The fact is, more cleaning power can be packed into a smaller space using powder.” 😀

2b. Laundry: Nellie’s All-Natural, Oxygen Brightener, Powder, 2 lbs (900 g)

Same reason as the above, for though stains and odors!

3a. Toothpaste:

Toothpaste.png

I read a lot of bad stuff about fluoride in toothpastes and was feeling quite conflicted at first since all my dentists kept insisting that we should always use toothpastes with fluoride. Well I’ve been using these 2 brands of toothpastes for a while now and have not been scolded by my dentist for not caring for my teeth yet – as long as I brush and floss often (i.e. twice a day). Currently using Auromere which has a funky taste at the start because of all the herbs in it!

3b. Toothbrush: Smile Brite, Replaceable Head Toothbrush, V-Wave, Extra-Soft, 1 Toothbrush Handle & Head

Natural bristles! Plus this comes with replaceable heads so you don’t have to keep throwing away the body, save the Earth! One toothbrush stick at a time haha.

4. Body Soap: Nubian Heritage Bar Soaps

Nubian Heritage.png

Have you ever wondered how our ancestors a few hundred years ago soaped themselves?

Well that question bothered me for quite awhile until I did some digging and found out all they used were soap bars like these! 100% natural, they are made from various plant based oils, butters, extracts, peels, juices, minerals, etc. Most of these come from authentic recipes from various cultures around the world and certified organic and fair trade.

I use this same bar for my body, face and hair. At a relatively inexpensive price of less than SGD$6 a bar, one bar can last me more than a month! (Most days I soap once a day but shower twice)

Check out their website for more details!

5. Natural Sunblock: Dr. Mercola, Healthy Skin, Natural Sunscreen, SPF 30, 8 fl oz (236 ml)

Similar to the detergent, we should avoid putting chemicals on our skin as much as possible. Hence I opted to buy this brand of sunblock after comparing a number of brands on the Environmental Working Group (EWG) site which rates them based on a number of criteria such as adequate UVA/UVB protection balance, amount of harmful ingredients, etc.

Conclusion

That’s a wrap! Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I hope it was beneficial in some way to you!

I’m always open to suggestions and comments! Also if you have recommendations of your own do leave them below! I might try them and update this post!

To your health,
Jahn
