3-Day Juice Fast + Juice Recipe!

This is the juice recipe Dr. Kamat prescribed for me on the spot. It makes roughly 1 cup and I was told to drink as many as I needed during the day, up to 5-6 times.

juice ingredients

Ingredients (organic as much as possible):

  1. Kale – 2 stalks (use baby spinach if no kale)
  2. Celery – 2 stalks
  3. Parsley – a few strands
  4. Green Apple – half
  5. Avocado – half
  6. Ginger – 1.5 cm cube
  7. Lemon – small slice

Directions:

  1. Wash the kale, celery, ginger and green apples. (don’t peel the skin off the apple) If using non-organic ingredients, wash them with vinegar and baking soda to remove pesticides.
  2. Soak kale, celery and ginger in cold water for 30 min. (These are the fibrous/tough ingredients and its recommended to soak them before juicing)
  3. Cut apple into quarters, celery into 10 cm or smaller pieces and other ingredients into desired size for juicer. Remove all seeds.
  4. Add ingredients into juicer one at a time except the avocado – add it together with some apples/lemon or the avocado will just come out as a pulp like guacamole without any juice!
  5. Drink to your heart’s content!

I made 4 batches at at a go in the morning because I didn’t want to clean up repeatedly after each juice. Throughout the fast, I drank about 3 cups a day. First cup only when I started to get hungry around noon. No breakfast.

The Fast

Prior to this fast, I had been semi fasting on Good Friday, eating only a meal of salad and an avocado.

Day 1 – I was feeling slightly better, less pain in the ankle joints, mostly still in the right plantar fascia.

Day 2 – almost the same as day 1, not significantly better. Had a lot of mucus and sneezing in the morning but that cleared up in a couple of hours. However, in the middle of the night when I woke up to use the bathroom, the pain in the lateral side of my plantar was sharply increased, extremely painful. I have a feeling its related to something I took during the day which I will elaborate further on below.

Day 3 – The sharp, almost unbearable pain from last night was still there in the morning. It only started to do down when I tried walking more and after about 30 mins. During the day the pain was worse than day 1. By now, there was almost no pain in any joints in my body and I am about 80% sure that the pain in my right foot is solely from an inflammed peroneal tendon. The area of pain seems to point to it and it hurts most when I move or when I put weight on it. My left foot also has an inkling of pain at the same region but nothing compared to the pain in my right (10/10 in the morning!).

In addition to the juices, I ate:

  1. Coconut oil – about 1 tbsp with each juice
  2. Coconut milk – one cup a day, fresh from the market or frozen and later thawed
  3. BCAAs – bought from Holland & Barret, 6 capsules on Day 2 because I felt I was losing muscle and weight. I suspect this could have triggered the increase in pain.
  4. Red Boat fermented fish sauce – On Day 3, I stopped the BCAAs and added about half a teaspoon of fish sauce to each juice. This didn’t do much to the taste. (maybe a little saltier!) I figured I could get some amino acids and B vitamins from this and since it was fermented and free of any suspicious additives, this would not trigger an inflammatory response.

In conclusion, this is the first time I have done a juice fast. The juice was quite tasty and spicy I must say, probably from the ginger. It was interesting and I felt some tangible benefits such as the pain in my joints going away. However I doubt it was a real fast as the apples provided some sugars which should have put me out of a fasting state. Nevertheless, the added nutrients from the juices is something extra that I have not experimented with in previous fasts and this may be beneficial as the fasting gives my body a break from digestion (the fibres from the fruits and vegetables are removed when juicing) and the vitamins aid in the body’s continual recovery.

I have also learnt a valuable lesson not to trust off the shelf products, especially when they come in capsule forms with many other additives and stabilisers. This reaction from my body was so sharp and sudden, I was terribly worried. The substitution of the BCAAs with the Red Boat Fish sauce was a neat ‘bio-hack’ for preventing too much muscle catabolism and I’m pretty proud of this idea actually. 😀 Until I find a better amino acid supplement, I might just continue taking fish sauce on future fasts!
