AUTOIMMUNE ARSENAL: Antimicrobial + Antifungal Medication for Gut Dysbiosis

This is the first of a series of posts related to autoimmune disease and the ‘weapons’ we have against it. Hence the title Autoimmune Arsenal ;). There are numerous theories on the causes of autoimmune diseases from genetic predisposition to increased chemical use in the environment, drugs, emotional stress, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, ‘Leaky Gut’, etc. [1] This post will focus on infectious agents that cause gut dysbiosis and my personal experience utilizing the following “weapons” against them.

Following the recent results from a comprehensive stool analysis, I consulted my naturopathic physician on ways to treat the disproportionate amount of dysbiotic bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniea) and other potentially harmful ones (Citrobacter, Prototheca).

She recommended these two medications/natural supplements:

Antimicrobial+Antifungal medication
Tincture (left) and Grapefruit Seed Extract (right)
  1. Antimicrobial Tincture
A tincture is basically an alcoholic extract of certain herbs. My doctor mixes these herself and I forgot to ask what was in it so I do not know what the ingredients are at the moment. Its kinda like a customized medicine.
  2. Grapefruit Seed Extract
This natural antibacterial and antifungal was highly recommended in the report that came with the results (picture below). Based on in-vitro sensitivity of the organisms to various agents, it was found that Grapefruit Seed Extract produced consistently High Sensitivity (effectiveness) for both the Klebsiella pneumoniae (dysbiotic bacteria) and Prototheca spp (potentially harmful yeast if allowed to proliferate).
Reading the iHerb reviews, I realized that the liquid version of this extract has numerous uses. From applying on the skin for fungal infections, to treating mouth infections, blisters, cleaning vegetables, treating clothes, etc. Pretty handy!

She estimates it may take up to a month of consistently taking these for the dysbiosis to be cleared. I will update this post in a month then!

Initial Results

So far it’s been a week since I started taking these two supplements and I’ve felt a little improvement every day. In this week I also did a 3.5 day (86 hrs) fast and continued taking these during the fast (mixed with water). One day into the fast and ALL the pain in my foot that had been bothering me for the past 70+ days was gone! This continued on days 2 and 3 while the swelling and redness continued to subside. Here are some visual proof comparing the visual differences on 12 June (left) and 19 June (right), 1 week later.

Bottom Line

I’m not saying one or two natural supplements can miraculously heal your autoimmune disorder but if your autoimmune disease has been linked to possible bacterial/viral infection (do some research! Some links below.), this is worth a shot. Better yet, have a comprehensive stool analysis or other related tests done to quantify and convince yourself that there is some major imbalance in your gut flora that needs fixing. That said, killing the bad guys may be the first step. Next you should focus on repopulating the gut with good guys, as many varieties as you can get. This will be a future topic in this series.

To your health,
John

    1. Sigh I know how you feel. Hope it helps! I use crutches most of the time now to try to relieve some of the pain. I find this has helped it heal up faster too. Another great remedy is fasting. By the 3rd day the pain is down tremendously.
